Inside the plastic package is a fingernail sized silicon chip with transistors and other components etched on its surface. Later we'll see a bigger chip with hundreds of pins. This is a small chip with just a few "pins" of electrical connection. I pulled this out of the e-waste pile at the Stanford CS building, so it's probably kind of old. Here is a silicon chip inside its plastic package. Silicone (soft substance on cooking utensils) Chips are packaged in plastic, with little metal legs.Chips can contain billions of transistors.Microscopic transistors are etched onto silicon chips.Silicon chip - fingernail sized piece of silicon."Switch" that we can turn on/off with an electric signal One of the most important inventions in history Transistors are "solid state" - no moving parts Transistor - vital electronic building block."Hardware" refers the physical parts of the computer, and "software" refers to the code that runs on the computer. This section will introduce major parts and themes of how computer hardware works. The computer is an amazingly useful general-purpose technology, to the point that now cameras, phones, thermostats, and more are all now little computers. Like piano (hardware) and music (software).
Computers have two main parts: hardware and software.
